Senior and Special Needs Pets

CHS is in need of adoptive homes that will provide care for its senior and special needs pets.

Senior pets make loving companions that often just need a quiet place to call home; the word "senior" simply defines their age group - not their vitality! "Shiloh", shown above, is an example of one of CHS's past senior pets. The fee is waived for senior pets.
Special Needs pets are animals requiring some extra attention due to a medical condition or physical infirmity. Diabetic, blind, deaf animals and FIV cats are some examples of these great animals who pay you back with a lot of love. The fee is waived for special needs pets.

Below are some of CHS's wonderful special pets available for adoption.

Amber (Special Needs)

Amber is a very sweet 6-7 yr old white, pink and brown Greyhound Boxer mix who needs a very special owner. She has Addison's disease which is caused by a lower than normal production of hormones by the adrenal glands near the kidneys. Addison's can be managed with a daily dose of Prednisone and monthly blood work. As she gets older Amber will need shots. With appropriate treatment, dogs with Addison's can live long and happy lives. In fact Amber has been a friendly, loving , sweet and energetic family dog. She has won the hearts of the shelter staff. She knows sit, paw, down and up. The best environment for Amber would be low key, consistent and as stress free as possible- with no cats, no other dogs and with an owner who will not leave her alone all day.

Amber is housetrained and absolutely loves to go for car rides! She is a gentle and lovely girl, and although she has lived beautifully with an autistic boy, she is also an athletic, rambunctious girl, who can unknowingly knock over "little ones" when she becomes excited. For this reason she is better suited for a home with adults or older children only. Amber is a strong and natural athlete - she loves to run around outdoors and would make a great hiking companion!

Amber is in great need of a kind and special person who is wililng to deal with her health needs. As she becomes older she will need a shot every 4 to 6 weeks - other than that she is just like any other dog - strong and playful!! She is a real love with a heart of gold! Because of her special needs, the adoption fee will be waived for the right home.

Adopted Pets

Izzi (Senior)
Izzy and her sister Abby were both ADOPTED!!!

Izzi is a 12-year old kitty looking for a nice cozy retirement home. She is a beautiful long-haired tortoiseshell.

Because Izzi is a senior, the adoption fee will be waived for the right big-hearted home.

(A personal note from a CHS volunteer: "As the owner of an adopted deaf dog, I'd like to mention how rewarding owning a deaf dog is and what an honor it is to be part of her quiet world. We have to do a few things a little differently, such as using more hand cues to communicate and being extra careful that she does not walk off-leash for safety reasons. Aside from these minor things, I've found little difference between her and my hearing dogs, except that she is about 10 times more observant! She's a fun and amazing dog who gets along with everything.")

Quinn and Quartz
(special needs/bonded pair)
ADOPTED!!! Sweet girls are HOME!

This adorable little 3&1/2 month old pair are two sisters and must be adopted together. They're an exuberant mix of Dalmatian, Lab, Australian Shepherd plus the rest is any body's guess. Unfortunately, they both have cataracts. Quinn is totally blind in his right eye and can see very little out of her left. She is also deaf. Quartz acts as Quinn's ears and her eyes are a little better. Someone who has worked with blind or deaf animals would be a perfect adopter. They would benefit from crate training as they can be rambunctious when left at home alone. They are almost fully house trained, know how to sit and love playing with toys. Quinn and Quartz have lived with other dogs. Cats are new to them so they would need to be cat tested. They will need time to adjust to a new environment or any changes They do not enjoy car rides.
Please, before you consider adopting these special pups, consult your vet for information on what exactly their future needs will be. Because of the medical and special care they will need for the rest of theirlives, the adoption fee is waived. It is recommended that they go home together as they hate being apart.

The following is an excerpt from Best Friends Animal Society, a sanctuary with many years experince in adopting FIV positive cats into loving homes:
"FIV stands for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. It's a lentivirus, meaning that it progresses very slowly, gradually affecting a cat's immune system. It is passed through blood transfusions and through serious, penetrating bite wounds - mainly by stray, intact tom cats. The most well-known lentivirus in humans is HIV. But the two are not at all the same, and you can't get FIV from a cat. In fact, the only thing about FIV that you can catch is a bad case of the rumors."

Update: On February 28, 2010 Lucy found a very special person, who adopted her. She has a home!!

Lucy (Special Needs/Senior)

Needed: A Special Person for a Special Persian

Lucy is a gorgeous, sweet smoke colored Persian with golden eyes. An elegant lady, she wouldn't reveal her age but we believe she is about 11 years old. She is a people oriented love bug and expects of course to be a pampered pet in her new home. She must be an only cat as well as an indoor one.

When Lucy's guardian passed away at 93, Lucy's world as she knew it, came to an end. She was homeless. To make matters more difficult, Lucy had contracted FIV. FIV is a cat only disease - humans can not catch it. Cats with FIV have weakened immune systems, but can live long, normal, happy lives.

Lucy's compromised immune system makes her more susceptible to diseases. She needs to be kept indoors to reduce the chances of picking up other infections. For this reason she must also avoid raw foods. A nutritious diet of good kitty food will help her keep her health and her figure. Her long silky coat will need daily combing to avoid matting . A quiet, secure, nurturing environment would be best as that is what she is used to. Lucy will also need semi annual visits to the vet to monitor her health. [She's not too thrilled about that.]

As a special needs cat, Lucy's adoption fee will be waived for the right home.
Will it be yours?

Tallulah (Special Needs)
ADOPTED and in a wonderful HOME!

This gorgeous girl is about 4 years old. She has a very sweet and affectionate laid-back nature. She has no back teeth and has had some seizures, so she is waiting for an understanding and kind soulmate to come get her. She does well with both cats and dogs--what a nice little lady!! She has been at CHS since 11/20/09.

Because Tallulah has special needs, the adoption fee will be waived for the right big-hearted home.
